THE WELSH FARM
363 Swan Pond Road, Martinsburg
“Something old, something new…” No, it’s not a bride; it describes the Welsh Farm. Established in 1785, the farm remained in the Welsh family until it was sold in 2015. The new owners respected and preserved much of the historic house while remodeling and completed a large addition comprising the “new” part.
The 2-story house was built of local red brick and consisted of four rooms on the first floor and four on the second floor. Additionally, the home had both front and back porches, with the upstairs portion acting as a sleeping porch.
The new owners’ remodeling of the original house resulted in an open area with hardwood floors throughout. Many period pieces reflect the house’s century-old roots. A French door and deck off the dining room offer beautiful views of farm country.
The extensive addition, designed and built by the owners (he is a professional contractor), includes a two-car garage, full bath, family room and laundry room, with an attractive side-entrance to the house and stairs to the second floor.
The second-floor extension has enclosed the sleeping porch, made a family sitting & game area, and added a master bedroom & bath. The windows in the spacious bedroom offer more panoramic views of the original Welsh farmland.
The out-buildings include the owner’s workshop, a greenhouse, a chicken coop and a pool house and outdoor party area that goes with the newly installed pool. Extensive plantings and gardens that surround the house add color to the outside from spring through fall.
